1st Collectors & Toys Festival

on March 3rd & 4th 2007 in the Congress Center Mainz

After a year break it was exciting to re-experience the festival feelings. We like to say thank you at this point to everybody concerned, the exhibitors, visitors and all helpers being involved.

It was a completely new environment to everybody. The event took place for the first time in the Congress Center Mainz, better known as the Rheingoldhalle. After nine years organizing the Steiff Festival in the familiar environment of Giengen it took some time to get used to the multiple bigger premises.

Exhibitors area, the displays for the exhibition of rarities and the auction items and the auction zone has been all together in one big hall. In the lounge drinks and beverages were offered and enough space to meet between collectors for smalltalk or just relax in a corner.

Collectors items and toys offered for sale mostly were products from Steiff. Besides old and new plush animals from other manufacturer, literature for collectors, dolls, car- and ship models and on top even comic- and action figures were offered. The emphasis and the consumer's taste were definitly Steiff items. Especially on focus were the displays with the 100 auction items.

It was nice, to see so many well known people from the Giengen Festival days. We would have loved to see more visitors from the vicinity. Because of the billboard advertising and the advertisements in different newspapers and magazines we’ve expected a little more positive response.

The interest in the auction was – as usual – tremendous. People were waiting with bated breath until the first lot was offered. Collectors from nearly all over the world were attending in person, had sent a representative or followed the auction on the telephone. German TV was present with a camera and an interview team, so everything was as usual.
Die erzielten Zuschläge können sich sehen lassen. Los-Nr. 87, der Teddybär aus der Zeit um 1908, erreichte mit 40.000,00 € den höchsten Preis und ging an einen Telefonbieter aus Übersee. Weitere Bären wurden zwischen 10.000,00 und 22.000,00 € zugeschlagen. Rekordverdächtig sind auch die 3.000,00 €, die für den nur 4cm großen Woll-Spatz von 1933 erzielt wurden. Mit 3.300,00 € wurde der Pinscher Ceasar zum teuersten Hund an diesem Abend. Das Gesamtergebnis der Auktion beträgt mehr als 170.000,00 € ohne Aufgeld. Als Fazit aus dieser Feranstaltung nehmen wir mit, dass sich der Sammlermarkt für Steiff Erzeugnisse in den letzten Jahren zwar verändert hat, aber nach wie vor sehr großes Interesse besteht und die Sympathie und Liebe für Hochwertige Produkte weiterhin ungebrochen ist. Natürlich hat eBay den Markt transparenter gemacht und auch andere Faktoren haben deutliche Spuren hinterlassen. Aber auch hier sind neue Ideen gefragt und neue Wege müssen beschritten werden um die Zukunft dieses wunderschönen Sammelgebietes der heutigen Zeit entsprechend zu gestalten.
